About our Mama & Baby Yoga Classes

As you begin to learn the baby yoga movements and sequences, and even though you are in a room with other mothers and babies, you will lose yourself with your baby; enjoying the non verbal communication taking place between you as though you are both in your own private bubble.

The classes are great for getting out and meeting new mums, or just getting out and enjoying your time with baby. You will notice from week to week your baby’s development, how they are beginning to focus on you, look into your eyes, stretch, try to touch you, wiggle, try to roll, smile and respond to your touch and voice.

The Benefits of Mama & Baby Yoga

The Baby Yoga element of the class: The physical activity your baby receives, through carefully selected yoga poses adapted from classic Hatha Yoga, during a single class is equivalent to carrying or handling baby for the whole day. With this in mind it is not uncommon for baby to sleep more deeply following their yoga class.

We start with a massage for baby so that their muscles are warmed up, just in the same way that we will warm our own muscles before exercising.

We will move through tactile sequences making bonding with your baby fun while encouraging neural development, as at birth a baby’s brain and nervous system are not fully developed. Tactile stimulation contributes to the development of brain and nervous system.

Many sequences lend themselves to song and rhythm, using songs during the class we encourage language development and keep baby engaged. Don’t worry if you can’t carry a tune, babies love the sound of their mother’s voice and the Yogita London teacher will lead the way.

The yoga movements help baby develop their spine, supple joints, strengthen and bring awareness to muscles for example the muscles baby needs to begin to roll. It will help builds baby’s digestive and vestibular system, relieve wind and enliven all of their body’s systems.

You will gradually see baby’s progress during activities like tummy time: from the first time when baby can barely lift their head off of the mat; to confidently and excitedly holding their neck and head up smiling and looking around at everyone, and everything, around them.

It can often be difficult to know what to do with a very small baby as they are very dependent on you for everything, entertainment included. Our Mama & Baby Yoga sessions will help you to develop and enhance your daily routine with baby.

Use your Intuition

Don’t be afraid to listen to your intuition, you know your baby better than anyone else and what is right for them. If baby doesn’t like a particular movement don’t continue with it. Try it again next time. Never force a movement with your baby. Just do what is comfortable. If baby only wants to open their arms one inch, then just do that one inch movement.

You will find that over time this will increase until they are able to achieve the full movement. Each baby progresses at their own unique rate. It is not uncommon for babies to keep their limbs firmly circled up during the first few months while others like to fling their arms open like a startled bat!

The great thing about the Yogita London class is that you can adapt the movements to make them more gentle or slow to suit your baby until they are comfortable with the whole movement.

Yoga for you, a new mum

The Postnatal Yoga element of the class: Now baby has arrived, your life has changed, you will face physical and emotional challenges as you reclaim and restore your body and adjust your priorities, commitments, obligations and transition into being a new mum. While taking care of a new life and finding your way through the early stages of parenthood it’s only natural to put your needs aside in the interest of your baby.

Yogita London want to use Yoga to support and pace you through your postnatal period and demanding new role as a mother to help you regain your strength and find mental calm.

Yogita London wants to ensure that you do not rush back to a Yoga practice which your body may not be ready for which is why we say, in line with medical professionals, that you can come back to the Yoga mat with Yogita Londonfrom week six or from week eight after birth if you have had a Caesarian section. When you do return, listen to what your body is ready to do and remember that there is no ego or competition involved in Yoga, pace yourself.

The yoga for mums element of this class focuses on abdominal muscles, pelvic floor muscles, tension in the shoulders and neck, strengthening the core and relaxation.

By gently engaging the abdominal muscles we create stability so that our backs are supported as we move through our specially selected and adapted postures.

A very common element of a new mum is pain and tension in the shoulders and neck. When we are stressed, especially as a new mother experiencing difficulty feeding baby we tend to pull our shoulders up around your ears which creates a lot of pain and tension in the neck. We will add movements to relieve this.

It is not uncommon for you as a new mum to hunch over while carrying your newborn instead of having a lengthened back. This is especially due to your concerns over their fragility or when nursing and feeding a new baby. Both these activities can place a strain on the upper back. Therefore we will offer you shoulder openers to help loosen the muscles and ease tension.

The pelvic floor is stretched significantly during birth, we will revisit pelvic floor exercises and focus on your new set designed especially for postnatal recovery.

We will practice strengthening postures in preparation for future lifting and carrying of your baby as they grow heavier.

Nervous about coming to class with baby

Yogita London understands that it is not uncommon for new parents to feel anxious about some day to day activities, after all everything is a new experience and a new baby can seem so fragile.

The good thing is, you are all new mums together being guided by a qualified Baby Yoga Teacher, in a baby friendly environment. Do not worry if baby cries, or falls asleep, or you’re a little late, if baby vomits or you need to change a nappy or two in class. That’s fine, it’s only natural. At Yogita London we aim for a relaxed environment.

Why not take a look at Jen’s very open experience of going to her first Baby Yoga class with her daughter Alej…

If you still feel nervous about coming along to class, get in contact with Jen so that we can have a chat. Mama and Baby Yoga is such a special time for you and baby, we wouldn’t want you to miss out.
